The theater educates and trains new generations of aspiring theater professionals through its "living laboratory" of productions and public play readings, and by holding classes and workshops in acting, improvisation and playwriting. Top Hawaiʻi actors, such as Jason Scott Lee, alongside a core of Kumu stage veterans, such as Dann Seki and Wil Kahele, have performed at Kumu Kahua.

Kaiao: The time before the sun peeks above the horizon, skies are lit with morning colors, air crisp, and the day is new. It was at this time of dawn that my grandma wrote her best compositions. As an extraordinary Hawaiian steeped in the practices of Hula, she was aware of her own creative processes, as well as the strokes of geniuses that seem to be floating in the morning sky, searching for that able vehicle. Knowing about my grandma and her favorite time of morning has always inspired me to identify and refine my pursuit for creativity, as well as to provide the space for other creatives to do the same.
Space: Inspired by being raised in the back of a craft fair tent with a jar of LEGO, the opportunity of time and space, to tinker with each possibility, to create something new or something seen in my imagination. Like the Japanese concept of Yutori, we honor that idea of creating space for growth, encouraging conversation, collaboration and iteration. "Kaiao_Space / Smith St." is that space featuring specialty projects from our Design Studio and the collaboration with like-minded creatives.

After relocating to Hawaii from Indiana in 2010, Branson was mesmerized by this island paradise surrounded by blue waters and filled with lush greenery. All of this awakened his passion to draw and create artwork, turning fantasies into reality.

The legend of Stewbum & Stonewall began in the early 1970's when two fine gentlemen, Joseph T. Garvey (aka Stewbum, aka Joe Mama) and Thomas R. Jackson (aka Stonewall, aka Homer) met in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania while dating girls that were sisters. Becoming instant best friends, they were blue-collar, hardworking guys who loved cracking jokes, muscle cars, great music, one-liners, telling stories, football, general monkey business and of course, beer. Lots and lots of beer.
This brewery was founded by Darren J. Garvey (son of Stewbum) and Eric T. Jackson (son of Stonewall) as a tribute to the friendship and lives of our fathers.
